On my most recent trip to California I decided to travel light. I left all of my Nikon gear at home and took my Olympus EP-3 along with several Micro-Four-Thirds lenses.
On the day I made this shot, I was visiting Huntington Gardens and was photographing in their desert gardens where several of these birds were flitting amongst the desert flowering plants. On this attempt to photograph one of them, I got lucky! But, I wouldn't have been lucky if I wasn't ready.
If you have visited my portfolio you have probably noticed that I like to photograph flowers. I usually do this with a long lens. On this particular day I was using my typical flower photography camera / lens configuration. The lens, in this case, was the Panasonic 100-300mm lens, which translates to 200-600mm on the Olympus EP-3 body. The vibration reduction on the lens is quite good as I was hand-holding the camera at the time I made this shot.
Until next time...
